uses of infrared on macbook aluminum?

is there any other used for the infrared receiver in the macbook aluminum besides for the remote? like for example i have a camera that has infrared, and on the owners manual says you can pair it with other cameras, devices with high speed infrared transmission capability, or with device with IrSimpleShot (IrSS)
